I like Calvin and Hobbs but this really didn’t make any sense to me.

Why is the language all funny? I don’t get it.

3
From Nelli · Written on Feb 18, 2008 at 17:47

It’s not that funny if you do not know the background. It is from a Japanese video game where two parties battle each other like Calvin and the girl. That’s why it says “War begins” in the headline.
The language is considered funny because the video game is originally in Japanese and the translation into English can only be described as poor. Just look at the syntax. No native speaker would use a sentence like “They set up us the bomb”. Well, it is used amongst video game players anyway and I have to admit the absurdity of it does make it cult.

Not only is the strip hilarious, but all the dumb comments by people who wonder about it just top it off. I mean, it’s basically written all over the page that this is a parody — of two great ’80s works at the same time!
I didn’t get it either but it just took a few clicks to find out about Zero Wing etc. My, people are so dumb it’s funny AND sad!

From P.S. · Written on Apr 29, 2008 at 22:26

BTW anyone who knows Calvin and Hobbes at all has already got to have seen many of these panels in past strips…it uses a lot of classics.

From Artie · Written on Jul 24, 2008 at 15:58

Well, the artistic style looks identical to that of Watterson…now the language if one has played strategy video games, in other words RTS such as Age of Empires you would realize that what Susie says “All your base are belong to us” is a cheat code for beating the opponent. If memory serves right I think that cheat code is from Blizzard’s “Warcraft III.” I’ll have to look into it further!

From Warcraft 3 · Written on Aug 14, 2008 at 10:33

Dude, some of those lines, like “all your base belong to us” and “somebody set up us the bomb” are warcraft 3 cheats.

P.S sorry didn’t see your post Artie

...my god….

Here’s the story:

years ago, a game company in Asia hired high school or college students to TRANSLATE a video game for the US. The dialogue used in this cartoon is the dialogue that they translated for the first scene of the game. Obviously the dialogue is all messed up, and is therefore HILARIOUS, and became a WELL KNOWN MEME. If you don’t know what “all your base are belong to us” is from, you’re either 5 years old, or 80 years old.

Those of you who have questioned this cartoon before posting have set yourselves up the FAIL for not just looking it up…

22
From Jake · Written on Dec 23, 2008 at 16:46

I know this. Some of the lines in the strip are cheat codes for Warcraft 3. WHen Hobbes says, “Somebody set up us the bomb.” don’t use that cheat if you have Warcraft 3 because that cheat makes you lose. But use the cheat that says,“All your base belong to us.” you will win a battle. Take this advice.

R U all serious? Everyone at my school would understand this. The dialogue is from the opening scene of an old video game that was originally in japanese and was severely screwed up upon translation. It has even got a Wikipedia article. The WoW cheats are references to this game also

27
From Mike · Written on Jan 09, 2009 at 16:14

WOW is using extracts from “Zero Wing” as cheat Codes – the WOW coders obviously understand what is going on…...

Everyone should know the dialouge is used for comedic effect without anyone saying anything because that big of a screw up wouldn’t get through publishing unless there was a purpose, for one, and for two, all of you who know that it is a cheat obviously have too much time for world of fagland as it is and need to actually do something useful in your life. I mean shit if you’re going to play the video game at least play it right. You guys spend all day on it and still use the cheat codes whether it’s to win or lose is pointless. CHEAT code haha. and you guys know it by heart. I’d be embarrassed. As for me, I’m leaving this message because I could not leave this page without ridiculing these nerds who feel all accomplished on their mental stature thinking they know so much when everything they know results back to world of war craft and halo. haha, good luck with the ladies gentlemen. Those girls must rip off their clothes instantly when you tell them you have the code to win every battle on world of war craft but your mom still takes care of you. =) Majorr Turnnn Onn!

I get the jokes in the comic, hell i own the game ‘Zero Wing.’ The only thing i do not get is why people have to be so damn cruel when writing in the forum. whoever wrote post # 28 needs to learn a little respect, for an example. Look up zero wing, watch the opening of the game on you tube or something; Then read the comic again, laugh, and get over it.

So that guy from this strip: http://xkcd.com/286/ should flood the web with his stuff soon…

Also the TV top right was shopped in from another strip (it be in the right style), but the grey line it stands on is a blatant lie. Srsly now.

I don’t get it! What you say? Anyway I think the majority of commenters are kids. To them the sarcasm probably escapes. So kids, search on google: engrish.
And another thing! If you understand Calvin and Hobbes how can’t you understand this?
You probably should reread every comic when you grow up.

don’t forget, people, this strip is from the mind of an adolesent. a CHILD.
the sense of war in a childs point of view. these children use snowballs, but, in reality, people use bombs and bullets. get with the reality of world news.

LOL, I’m neither 5 nor 80. I was partying and chasing tail when Zero Wing was popular, not popping zits and masterbating to dumpster porn. Being a fan of both, poor translations and Calvin & Hobbes, I found this hilarious. Thanks to the people that explained the connection, I am one of those that needed an explaination. The rest of you that wasted your lives playing games and blogging, get off your high horse of useless information and ask youself, “was it really worth it?” “ALL YOUR WOMEN ARE BELONG TO US!” ....still laughing….

42
From Joe · Written on Nov 30, 2009 at 22:23

First two panels are from the “That snowball had your name written all over it” strip. This takes select panels from different places and makes a story of it’s own. The “language barrier language” makes it all the more humorous.
